A Message from your Evidence Based Birth® Instructor:

My first baby is now a high schooler, but the memories of that first pregnancy and birth are still so strong. We were thrilled to be becoming parents, and I dove into learning about this amazing time. When my labor started, I was so confident – I thought I was well prepared. Not long after arriving at the hospital I learned otherwise.

When my labor didn’t proceed as expected, the pressure for interventions steadily increased. One by one, I accepted them. And my body rejected them, with one complication after another. My son was born in the operating room, with a first APGAR of 4. Instead of cuddling him, I watched the backs of the staff working on him, no one telling me anything. When he was stable, a nurse briefly touched his cheek to mine, then whisked him off to the nursery. This was not even close to what I had imagined for my birth, and all these years later I still remember how that felt.

Like so many parents, we didn’t know what questions to ask or how to decide when to say yes and when to ask for time to consider our options. As my now 97-year-old grandmother will tell you, memories from your birth experiences stay with us, forever.

In the past decade and a half, I’ve worked to positively impact birth, one family at a time. I am so excited to be able to broaden that impact through the Evidence Based Birth® Childbirth Class!

Above and beyond... with twins

“Our doula experience was wonderful! She was knowledgeable and helped me figure out things I didn't even know would benefit me and the babies. She went above and beyond to really understand what I needed and figuring out priorities, including my health.”

— first time mother with premature twins

Everything I hoped for, and more!

“She did a wonderful job helping me and my family adjust after the birth of my second child. She made everything easier in every way. She was everything I hoped a postpartum doula would be -- and more, in ways I didn't realize I needed until she was already helping with them.”

— mother with a history of postpartum depression

Exactly what our family needed...

"I had an unexpected C-Section delivery and our son spent his first week in the NICU, so we asked Laura to come and help us adjust to life at home. Laura was incredibly compassionate and kind. She was able to interact well with both of our children, give insight to me (mom) as I adjusted to having a newborn in our home! My husband felt at ease knowing that I had someone at home to help me while he was at work and I felt comforted knowing that she would help me with the tasks that felt overwhelming. Laura was exactly what our family needed! We are so grateful to her for being so diligent in her work for us in such a vulnerable time!”

Easing your transition into your new family

Susquehanna Doulas is ready to accompany you, and support you, every step of the way.

Your baby. Your feeding choices. Our 100% support.

Susquehanna Doulas provides you with Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC) who are professionally trained and unquestionably supportive. We use our knowledge and experience to help you make infant feeding decisions that best fit your family's needs.

We listen to your needs and fully support your infant feeding choices. And when you have questions we can help you navigate decisions. Our certified lactation counselors are trained in breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and supplemental feeding.

We can help you breastfeed comfortably, offer advice on bottles and nipples, assist you with your breast pump, and provide a customized feeding plan.

If feeding isn't going well, our certified lactation counselors can create a plan to get you back on track. And they are trained and qualified to recognize times that a referral is appropriate, such as if there is a lingual tie (also called a tongue tie) that may be making it challenging for your baby to take in adequate milk.

Our certified lactation counselors have a specialized scope of knowledge that can complement the basic healthcare your baby is receiving from a pediatrician or family healthcare provider.

Feeding your baby is one of your most important responsibilities. Susquehanna Doulas will help you feel confident that you've got it under control.

In addition to supporting families wanting guidance and confidence learning to feed their babies, we have supported:

  • Breastfed singletons and twins

  • Formula fed singletons and twins

  • Babies with brief and extended NICU stays

  • Transitioning from bottle to breast

  • Exclusively breastfed babies

  • Babies fed exclusively with pumped milk

Newborn with food allergies

“My son began presenting with a food allergy upon birth. Numerous doctors and lactation nurses told me to switch him to formula to "heal his gut." But my mothering instinct knew this wasn't the right answer for us. When I came to Laura with my dilemma she fully supported my desire to continue nursing, provided me with resources in doctors who would help, and she offered support and guidance. I am happy to say that at 18 months I still have a nursing relationship with my son, we have been able to pinpoint his allergies and avoid them from a dietary standpoint, and his gut is healed. I'm sure I would not have the same outcome without Laura's initial support and guidance.”

— M, mother with strong desire to exclusively breastfeed

Update on my placenta capsules... They are fabulous! I feel calm and my energy feels focused.
— first time mother and Susquehanna Doulas client

Among the benefits of placenta encapsulation reported by our clients:

  • Improvement in overall energy level and decrease in feeling debilitating fatigue

  • More consistent breastmilk supply

  • Feeling better emotionally, especially if experiencing postpartum sadness

  • The availability of a cross-trained encapsulator to help address breastfeeding and newborn care questions.

*Upon request, your placenta may be encapsulated by member of Susquehanna Doulas also trained as a postpartum doula and/or certified lactation counselor

Placenta Encapsulation

Your placenta is encapsulated in a two-day process, which your encapsulator is happy to describe as she works. At the conclusion of the encapsulation you will be provided with written instructions for storing your capsules and guidelines for consumption.

During the encapsulation process, you are welcome to request advice about your baby, your healing, and/or breastfeeding. Upon request, we can provide an encapsulation professional who is also trained as a postpartum doula and/or certified lactation counselor, bringing extra benefit to your encapsulation appointment.

In Home Encapsulation

Our professional in-home encapsulation adheres to rigid safety protocols, including ongoing certificates in blood borne pathogens and food safety, to ensure your placenta capsules will be of the highest quality.

Your kitchen is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized both before and following encapsulation, ensuring safety. You are welcome to observe any portion of the process (or none at all). Our clients express appreciation for the transparency and assurance that there is zero potential for mix-up or cross-contamination during encapsulation. The spotless kitchen at the end is an added bonus.

Placenta Tinctures & more

Specialty custom placenta tinctures, made using your capsules, allow you to enjoy the benefits of your placenta encapsulation for months to come. Tinctures have fewer storage recommendations compared to capsules, making them ideal for use when traveling.

Other specialty services, including placenta prints and salves are available if arranged in advance.

Flavored placenta capsules available upon request.

Tinctures, salves and prints only available with purchase of a Placenta Encapsulation Package.
